high point glock

High Point Glock - BLUF: Don't waste your money on Hi-Point unless you're looking for a cheap toy. There are far better options for slightly higher prices.

Guns are expensive, and it's an investment of time and money to get serious about shooting - whether for sport or defense. I've done my best to find quality gear that won't break the bank. Enter the king of the bidding bucket; High Point C9. For years I had read stories about the metal boat anchor, the Glock 40 problem solver, the ultimate ghetto blaster. With a pocket full of cash and a head full of curiosity, I dropped $150 and walked away with my new high point, leaving everyone in the gun shop shaking their heads.

Pistol Review: Is The Hi Point As Bad As People Say It Is?

The C9 comes in a cardboard box containing a magazine, pistol lock, manual, spare peep sight (3 dot sights installed) and a chamber flag. The Hi-Point line of guns has its own unique aesthetic. The grip is incredibly smooth with soft ribbed edges on the front and back straps. The slide has some shallow serrations to help with manipulation, since the slingshot method will usually be the only way you can get a round. The manual safety, which also doubles as a slide lock, is a small metal bar that easily engages and disengages without a tactile response.

The zipper opens when empty. The action is not actually locked as is normally expected as it can be pulled back a bit and then manually locked with the handle.

When fired, the slide moves back and forth with a slow "ka-chunk" as the large block on top of the frame moves back and forth. The trigger is the worst I have ever experienced. Each pull is different from the last, with plenty of take-up, slack, stacking and all the other things that shouldn't happen in a good trigger; Not to mention its heavy draw weight.

The sight is adjustable for both windage and elevation (Lord knows why), the rear sight has two bright orange squares and the front has a bright yellow blade. The sights were easy to pick up and have a good size, but often lost their zero when firing. I did not try the included past ring rear sight. The magazine that comes with the gun holds eight rounds that often dive. Working with a pair of pliers is supposed to improve reliability, but I haven't tested. There is also a magazine cut-off, which I find disgusting on a handgun.

To disassemble the gun — which Hi-Point advises owners not to do — you need to pull back the slide and push out a pin with a plunger. On my gun, the slide didn't go far enough to remove the pin, so I took a screwdriver and scraped at the metal until I made a channel for the pin to travel with.

When I first said pot metal, I meant it. Also, the recoil spring and control rod are not obstructed by anything. No gaps, no holes, just rest on the smooth front of the slide, so be sure to keep your eyes peeled. Hi-Point firearms have a lifetime warranty, which I took advantage of when the recoil spring blew itself apart after disassembly. For something as simple as this, just call Hi-Point and give them your serial number and mailing address. From here they will ship the part for free and no questions asked. Two days later my new recoil spring and control rod arrived and I went to the range.

At the same time I was putting my first round through the C9, I was also testing out my brand new Glock 42. Imagine my shock when the Hi-Point was more reliable than the Glock within the first 100 rounds! The G42 suffered from double feeds in each magazine and inability to run on battery. While the C9 was mostly reliable and occasionally fired open on a steel-loaded magazine. After 100 rounds the tables turned. Glock ran flawlessly and Highpoint choked harder than Lord Vader himself. Across several ammo brands, the C9 began experiencing double feeds, ejection failures, failure to remove cartridges from the magazine, battery failure—just about every failure in the book. In an attempt to remedy this, I stripped the gun, cleaned and lubed it. Problems don't go away.

Six ounces heavier than a Glock 19 and about a quarter-inch thicker, the Hi-Point makes for a great club when it inevitably jams!

I thought that maybe the rough and uneven powder coating on the metal parts was the culprit, so I decided to try polishing the action by blasting it with 2500 grit sandpaper (something I would do on a good gun). never will). Despite significant improvements in mirror-like shine and smoothness, reliability remained the same: lackluster. Another 150 rounds did nothing but train my ability to clear bugs. Accuracy was the bad guy every moment, don't plan on building your local bullseye squad. Moral of the story: If you plan to use it defensively, don't train with it. Your best reliability will come in the first few magazines, you're just putting your life at risk by firing more than one box through the C9.

In general, I don't think of Hi-Point as anything more than a novelty. If you need a handgun to protect yourself or loved ones, shop elsewhere (EAA, S&W, and Ruger have solid options at a slightly higher price) or consider a long gun like the Maverick 88. Spend a few more dollars on your initial investment. Will save you money and heartache down the road; Believe me, I own a high point.
